Grandmother jailed over WWII 'family heirloom' pistol

A grandmother has been jailed for five years for possessing a "family heirloom" World War II pistol.

Gail Cochrane, 53, had kept the gun for 29 years following the death of her father, who had been in the Royal Navy.

Police found the weapon, a Browning self-loading pistol, during a search of her home in Dundee while looking for her son.

She admitted illegal possession of the firearm, an offence with a minimum five-year jail term under Scots law.

Cochrane told the High Court in Edinburgh that she had never contemplated she might be committing a crime by keeping the gun or that she might need to get a licence for the weapon.

She said: "I thought it was just a war trophy."

Now let's make sure we get the minimum sentence raised to 10 years as scum like this deserve.

Again, an irresponsible action by an American householder which lead to a gun being used, of which she never should have been allowed to have in the first place. According to the report the man who raped the women involved came back a second time, which begs the question - why weren't the police involved after the first incident? Does this say as much about America's bloodbath stance on allowing gun ownership than it does about the effectiveness police have on preventing violent acts to take place?

Robber killed by restaurateur

ALBANY, GA (WALB) – A suspect in a Moultrie armed robbery is dead, shot by the owner of a business he tried to rob.

Monday night, two men tried to rob a woman outside the Cuban restaurant she owns.

One of them shot her, but the woman's husband fired back. She's recovering, but one of the robbers was found dead today near the restaurant.

Since school let out Moultrie Police have seen an increase in armed robberies. Police weren't surprised that some owners are arming themselves to protect their businesses from this type of crime.

Since when has vigilantism ever been the answer? There is simply no justification for responding in a manner that leads to someone being shoot. It was bad enough that the criminal had a gun and shot his wife but the owner arming himself in response was an irresponsible escalation of violence on his part. Daily stories like this highlight the increasing danger the gun culture trend has in the US and the impact it exports over here with gun crime rising by as much as 50 percent in the capital and burglaries involving the use of guns at a record rise

We must continue to lobby the government to make sure this type of 'wild west' culture does not happen here. Guns have no place in a civilized society.

After searching through over 200 of the many so called "self defence" reports on this pro gun, probably far-right website, finally, here is the proof that puts gun ownership into perspective:

Shrewsbury women shot by her own gun

She was shot with her own gun — as she scuffled with a home invader.

That’s what St. Louis County Police are now revealing about last month’s shooting that left a Shrewsbury woman wounded. County police spokesman officer Rick Eckhardt says there is no indication the woman shot herself intentionally — and they say her story is supported by evidence of a forced entry.

“She had a (hand) gun in the bedroom and when awakened by an intruder, she grabs the gun,” Eckhardt said, “She’s being thrown around against the wall and the bed and next thing she knows, she was shot.”

Something tells me she wishes she would have given into his demands instead, as would have been sensible. Silly women, what the hell did she think she needed a gun for anyway? I could never understand this mentality.

So there you have it. If you have a gun for "self-defence" (Yeah, right..) your are more likely to get shot by it yourself.

Gun Mother nearly shoots intruder

Cape Girardeau mother used gun against man suspected of trying to rape her daughter - Southeast Missourian

"The man who Cape Girardeau police say attempted to rape a teenager was forced out of her Minnesota Avenue home at gunpoint by the victim's mother, according to a probable-cause affidavit filed in the case.

Craig Kizer, 51, who has no known address, was arrested shortly after the incident that occurred around 5:30 a.m. Sunday. The woman who alerted police said she was attacked by a 180-pound man carrying a knife while she was sleeping in bed. Kizer is charged with attempted forcible rape, armed criminal action and burglary, all felonies. He's also charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia."

What this women was doing with a gun is beyond me. Not only did she put her daughter in danger by having the thing in the house, she almost shot and killed another human being. This reckless behavior is typical of Americans who think it's their 'right' to have a deadly weapon - inconsiderate people who do not respect the rights of those of us who wish to live in a gun free society.

We should all be glad we live in the UK where this cannot possibly happen after our emergency ban on handguns following the Dunblane shootings. I hope the state of Cumbria follow our example and tighten their gun laws to meet our gold standard.

In other news, yesterday was the 21st anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre of around 7,000 protesters. This event proved that a citizenry doesn't need to be armed in order to stand up to a despotic tyrannical dictatorship - they can give a darn good shot at doing it unarmed!
